I devoted most of my time and energy to quantum computing lately. While science, engineering and technology have been the main source of fascination for me professionally, from time to time I feel overwhelmingly empty without experiencing the world from other angles, such as literature and art. During one such short-lived vacuum state, I picked up <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letter to My Daughter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Maya Angelou. It has served its purpose, like a creation operator adding a quantum of energy to the oscillator system. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outcome is an uplifting self that is ready for more challenges. I thank Maya Angelou for that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. Try to be a rainbow in someone\u2019s cloud. Do not complain. Make every effort to change things you do not like. If you cannot make a change, change the way you have been thinking. You might find a new solution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never whine. Whining lets a brute know that a victim is in the neighborhood. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am convinced that most people do not grow up. We find parking spaces and honor our credit cards. We marry and dare to have children and call that growing up. I think what we do is mostly grow old. We carry accumulation of years in our bodies and on our faces, but generally our real selves, the children inside, are still innocent and shy as magnolias. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s tell the truth to the people. When people ask, \u201cHow are you,\u201d have the nerve sometimes to answer truthfully. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the emperor is standing in my living room stripped to the buff, nothing should prevent me from saying that since he has no clothes on, he is not ready for public congress. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First write down that I said write down and think of the millions of people all over the world who cannot hear a choir, or a sympathy, or their own babies crying. Write down, I can hear &#8211; Thank God. Then write down that you can see this yellow pad, and think of the millions of people around the world who cannot see a waterfall, or flowers blooming, or their lover\u2019s face. Write I can see &#8211; Thank God. Then write down that you can read. Think of the millions of people around the world who cannot read the news of the day, or a letter from home, a stop sign on a busy street, or\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ship of my life may or may not be sailing on calm and amiable seas. The challenging days of my existence may or may not be bright and promising. Stormy or sunny days, glorious or lonely nights. I maintain an attitude of gratitude. If I insist on being pessimistic, there is always tomorrow. Today I am blessed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A friend may be waiting behind a stranger\u2019s face. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thought of only being a creature of the present and the past was troubling. I longed for a future too, with hope in it. The desire to be free, awakened my determination to act, to think, and to speak. &#8211; Frederick Douglass. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an unfamiliar culture, it is wise to offer no innovations, no suggestions, or lessons. The epitome of sophistication is utter simplicity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon later reflection of the painful incident, I am remembering what Arkansas gave me. I came to understand that I can never forget where I came from. My soul should always look back and wonder at the mountains I had climbed and the rivers I had forged and the challenges which still await down the road. I am strengthened by that knowledge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am never proud to participate in violence, yet I know that each of us must care enough for ourselves that we can be ready and able to come to our own defense when and wherever needed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I find myself filling with rage over the loss of a beloved, I try as soon as possible to remember that my concerns and questions should be focused on what I learned or what I have yet to learn from my departed love. What legacy was left which can help me in the art of living a good life? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Courage is the most important of all the virtues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southern themes will range from generous and luscious love to cruel and bitter hate, but no one can ever claim that the South is petty or indifferent. Even in little Stamps, Arkansas, black people walk with an air which implies \u201cwhen I walk in, they may like me or dislike me, but everybody knows I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The persons striving to live their religious beliefs know that the idyllic condition cannot be arrived at and held on to eternally. It is in the search itself that one finds the ecstasy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My passion for SET subjects only propels me forward with laser-like focus for a matter of weeks or a couple of months. That passion demands to be renewed by my love for humanity periodically. Much of that love is rooted in what I receive from the external world implicitly or explicitly, visible or invisible. Right now, I miss people who acted kindly towards me, gave me guidance, brought a little light to my world when it is dark, trusted me when I have not done anything to earn their confidence yet. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letter to My Daughter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one very generous gift to me from Maya Angelou. I will miss her in the years coming too. How marvellous it is to write and to read!
